Curtis is a proudly second-generation, family-owned company with over 70 years of history providing specialized industrial and environmental services. Rooted in Western Canada, Curtis has evolved from a small operation into a leading provider of maintenance and equipment services, trusted by some of the region's most vital industries. With a strong, experienced management team at the helm, Curtis maintains long-standing partnerships, including customer contracts spanning more than three decades, which contribute to the majority of the company's revenue and ensure operational stability.
The Industrial Division plays a critical role as an integrated enabler of Canada's largest steel plant, Evraz, by offering end-to-end support from everything from plant operations to handling output. Complementing this, the Environmental Services Division has become a leader in agricultural container recycling across Alberta and Saskatchewan, driving sustainability and innovation. Through these services, Curtis continues to deliver solutions that support industries while minimizing environmental impact, reflecting a commitment to both operational excellence and responsible practices.
Over the decades, Curtis has expanded and diversified its expertise, from steel and scrap recycling to equipment rentals, rail infrastructure, and more. Company History Timeline
1951
The Curtis family began doing construction business.
1960s
Expanded services to include building roads and lagoons. In 1968, Curtis Construction began business relationship with EVRAZ (formerly IPSCO).
1970s
Incorporated in 1970 as Curtis Construction Ltd., the company quickly expanded its services at EVRAZ, adding coil hauling, slag reclamation, and dust hauling. By 1976, Curtis established South Saskatchewan Steel Services Ltd. to support unionized operations and launched Operation Recycle Ltd. to pioneer automobile recycling. Expanding further, Curtis deployed a logger baler in Saskatchewan, advancing steel recycling capabilities.
1980s
Curtis expanded EVRAZ operations to Alberta, adding front-end loaders with grapples, rental equipment, and coil hauling transportation services. In 1987, the company diversified further by entering a joint venture to recycle farm containers, broadening its environmental impact.
1990s
Curtis enhanced EVRAZ services with onsite automotive and material handling repairs and introduced equipment support for CPR and CNR derailment cleanups. In 1998, the company launched Majestik Trailers, specializing in trailer manufacturing and repair services.
2000s
Curtis expanded EVRAZ services by offering land storage for excess scrap and rail cars from Wheat City Metals and increasing equipment rentals for its new coil hauling mill in 2008. That same year, the company began constructing a private rail spur line to support growing operations. Additionally, Curtis broadened its capabilities with welding and fabrication services for trailers, skids, and mobile units.
2010s
Curtis expanded storage services to include pipe for companies like Omega Steel and Premay Pipeline Hauling Ltd. After selling the Majestik Trailers division in 2010, Curtis retained its welding capabilities and completed construction of a private rail spur line in 2011, paving the way for future growth.
2013
In 2013, Westward Partners invested in Curtis, enabling the expansion of its recycling business and the use of its rail spur for yard storage, driving EBITDA growth.
2017
In 2017, Westward completed the buyout of its joint venture partner, fueling contract expansion and growth in the container recycling business.
2020s
Enhanced scrap steel purchasing capabilities by adding experienced personnel and secured new contracts for coil hauling services. Secured a new contract with CleanFarms to manage and recycle bulk containers across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.
